TREVOR FOUND LIFE more pleasant after he and Andie declared a...détente? He wasn’t sure how to word it, but they were cooperating. And maybe just a bit more.

He was welcome on trivia nights. He wasn’t the best player on the team, but he wasn’t the worst. And he was greeted warmly even though he didn’t have a lot in common with the rest of the team. He wasn’t from Cupid’s Crossing, but he’d been asked if he played baseball. No one minded that he was quiet or asked him if something was wrong because he didn’t talk a lot. Thursday nights had become the highlight of his week.

He’d been working on some ideas for the next round of B and Bs and had questions about what materials were available locally. He took advantage of the warmer relations with Andie to ask if she’d grab a drink with him while he picked her brains.

That was a Tuesday, and Tuesdays at the Goat was darts night. Darts was something Trevor was good at. He convinced Andie to pair up with him, and they won.

Afterward, Andie introduced him to the two men they’d played against. Their names were Dave and Nelson. Nelson was Abigail Carter’s grandson and Mariah’s fiancé. They sat at a table together and talked, and it was a fun evening. Trevor was invited back next week for darts, and it seemed he now had, if not friends, people to spend time with outside of work.

Now that he wasn’t doing an audit on the job every day, he had more free time. He didn’t want to spend that time isolated in his rental, alone and lonely. He felt that he was getting to know the real people in town.

He hadn’t planned on trying to fit in, not when he was going to be here for only a year. But the job was going well, and he was growing tired of the isolation he’d imposed on himself since the accident.

Since he and Andie hadn’t talked about the B and Bs on darts night, they stayed the next night in the trailer, bouncing ideas back and forth. When it got a little late, Andie’s mother messaged about dinner, and Trevor ended up invited and spending the rest of the evening there.

It wasn’t awkward, like the last time, and he didn’t take refuge in the spare room. That would have been weird, since he wasn’t staying over. Instead, Andie showed him around the construction yard. It wasn’t exactly the way he would set things up, but nothing looked problematic. He imagined this was the way Andie’s father had arranged things, and she wouldn’t want to change what he’d done.

By the end of May, the work on the mill was progressing without a hiccup. Trevor was checking things but staying on the side of due diligence. He had a life in Cupid’s Crossing, complete with friends and regular plans.

Mariah stopped by to see them on-site one day. She’d texted Andie and Trevor to let them know she was coming.
